WOOD STOVES AND INSERTS

Stoves made to the EPA 2020 standards will be the most efficient, cleanest burning stoves every made. Here's the who, what, where, when, why, and how.

  • Who? All wood stove manufacturers have to meet the new standards. All consumers purchasing a stove will have to purchase a 2020 compliant stove.
  • What? These standards mean that stoves produce less pollutants and provide more heat from less wood. Gases and small particles leaving the stove that still have heat value are reignited before leaving the stove to the chimney.
  • Where? Every state in the US has adopted the new standard.
  • When? Starting January 1st, 2020.
  • Why? Wood stoves are responsible for a large amount of air pollution, especially in northern states where they're used as a primary source of heat.
  • How? There are two ways of increasing a wood burning stove's efficiency. One way, called clean-burning, is by ducting the stove's air so it is released in specific locations while burning wood and smoke more completely. The second way, which involves a catalytic converter, makes smoke travel through a converter and lowers combustion temperature which allows smoke to be burned more completely. Catalytic stoves burn a little more efficiently and require involvement with the stove. Non-catalytic stoves require little to no involvement outside of regulating the stove's air.
