  • Converting Your Wood or Gas Fireplace to an Electric Fireplace

There are a lot of benefits to using an electric fireplace to warm your home. You no longer have to haul wood, and you'll see a drastic reduction in your heating bills compared to gas.

But what if you already have another type of fireplace? Can you change a gas fireplace to electric or convert a wood firebox? The short answer is yes - and it's actually quite simple. Here's why you might make the switch and how to convert your wood or gas fireplace insert heaters to electric heat.

    Why Change Your Existing Fireplace?

There's no denying your current fireplace offers just as much warmth as an electric fireplace. So why would you want to go to the trouble of changing it?

A big reason is that electric fireplaces are much easier to maintain. This is especially true compared to wood fireplaces that need regular cleaning to remove ash build-up, plus an annual cleaning that will require hiring a professional chimney sweeper. Switching to electric will save you time and money.

With wood fireplaces, you also have to think about where to keep the wood. You'll need a dedicated storage spot for it that's dry, covered and easy to get to when you need more fuel.

While gas fireplaces don't need cleaning, they still require proper maintenance. If you don't take care of them, they can be dangerous. Furthermore, they don't distribute heat as well as other types of fireplaces, leaving some areas of your home cold.

How to Replace Your Fireplace with an Electric Model

    electric fireplace

You'll be glad to know that it's easy to convert to a linear electric fireplace. The hardest part will be removing the old model that's currently in your home. Wood fireplaces are easy to remove, but a gas fireplace takes more steps as you're working with natural gas. In these cases, you'll want to get a professional to help you.

To convert your fireplace to electric, you'll need an electric fireplace insert. These self-contained fireplaces have everything you need to heat your home. You can install them in the existing fireplace to get your new heating source working quickly.

Here the process to install your new electric fireplace:

Step 1: Insert the fireplace. Add your fireplace and slide it back until it's sitting exactly where you want it to go.

Step 2: Attach the flue liner. You'll need to do this if you're replacing a wood burning fireplace. Slide the new flue liner down the chimney and attach it to the flue collar adapter on the fireplace insert.

Step 3: Situate your panels. Use chalk to mark where your fireplace is sitting, then move it back slightly. Attach the panel using the pre-drilled holes as instructed.

Step 4: Caulking. Now you'll need to caulk the seams between the fireplace and the inserts. You'll also need to caulk the seams around the panels.

Step 5: Attach insulation. Your fireplace insert will come with insulation strips. Add them to the back of the inserts and then move the fireplace into position.

Step 6: Plug your fireplace into the nearest wall outlet. Never use an extension cord.

Your electric fireplace heater is now installed. Sit back and enjoy the warmth this winter.

Benefits of Using an Electric Fireplace

There are a lot of reasons to replace your wood or gas fireplace with an electric fireplace. They include:

    • They're cheaper to run, with some models costing only three cents an hour to operate.
    • They offer more consistent heat than wood or gas fireplaces so you can keep your whole house warm.
    • You no longer need to move wood logs to keep your fireplace running.
    • They're better for the environment because you're not releasing harmful gases into the air.
    • You can still get realistic flames with your fireplace, so you don't have to give up a crackling fire on a crisp evening.

These are just some of the reasons why you'd want to replace your fireplace with an electric fireplace. They look amazing, are cheap to run and are easy to install. Electric fireplace inserts come in all kinds of styles and shapes, and you can find the right one that suits your home at HVACDirect.com.

Frequently Asked Questions about Converting to an Electric Fireplace

How much does it cost to convert a gas fireplace to electric?

If you're installing the electric fireplace insert yourself, the only cost for the conversion process is the new fireplace. If not, you can expect a professional installation to potentially cost up to $1,000 based on the insert size and other variables. If you need a new electrical outlet installed and/or need the old unit removed, add $150 to $400 in professional labor costs.

How much does it cost to convert a wood fireplace to electric?

The cost to install an electric fireplace insert in a former wood firebox is similar to that of converting a gas unit. One area where you might spend a little extra is to have a professional technician run a hardwire to the house's electrical box or add an outlet inside the firebox. This will conceal the plug for aesthetic purposes and also allow you to close the fireplace doors.

Do electric fireplaces use a lot of electricity?

The average electric fireplace uses about 1,500 watts of electricity. When using them just for decoration, a fireplace typically costs between 0.003 to 3 cents per hour to operate. Setting them to 50% so the heater powers on and off increases their electricity usage to nine cents per hour; the maximum heat setting doubles that.
