# SEER Efficiency Savings Calculator

Do you know how much electricity your air conditioner uses each year? It’s easy to find out by using our SEER Savings Calculator. Compare your current cooling expense to a new air conditioner from HVACDirect.com. The annual energy and electricity savings will amaze you.

Air conditioning and heat pump energy efficiency is measured by SEER which stands for Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio. The higher the SEER rating the more efficient your AC unit is and the less energy it consumes. Take a few minutes to use this Savings Calculator to find out how much money you can save in one year and in 20 years.

A typical example would include comparing a 3 ton, 8 SEER air conditioner to a new 3 ton, 16 SEER unit. Assuming the electricity cost to be \$0.14 per kilowatt hour and the AC runs 2100 hours per season you would save \$661 per year. The 20 year savings would be \$13,240! It will only take a few minutes to determine your actual savings. Drag the sliders to the correct number in each row.

Start with the tonnage of your unit. Tonnage is a measure of the size and cooling capacity of your air conditioner. To find out the tonnage you must look on the AC unit label out in your yard. Look at the model number and you will see a number within it that is divisible by 12. If yours has 36 it is a 3 ton air conditioner (36/12=3). Drag the slider to 3. If you are not sure about this you can call the manufacturer and provide the model and serial numbers to find out.

Next, Look on the same label to find the two digit SEER rating. It is also found on the air handler attached to your furnace. Drag to this number. The third step is to drag to the SEER rating of the new anticipated AC unit. Follow this by putting the energy cost in your area measured by cents per kilowatt hour. We’re almost finished. The last step is to insert the number of hours your air conditioning system operates per cooling season. The calculator will now show the actual savings in dollars per year and for 20 years. You many want to try this several times for comparison by changing the SEER number.

## Correct Size and Efficiency

We want to assist you with choosing the correct size and efficiency rating of your new air conditioner. An air conditioner that is too large or too small will waste energy and money. Those who tell you a bigger air conditioner is always better are misleading people. An AC that is too large is an overkill. An AC that is too large does what is called a “short cycle.” A short cycle occurs when the compressor doesn’t run long enough to dehumidify your home.

A short cycling AC system isn’t the only concern. In most cases the system will cycle on and off more often than necessary. This translates into an increase in operating costs and an overall shortage in the life of the system. Proper air conditioner sizing is critical to overall optimal performance.

An AC system that is too small will run too much to reach the thermostat cooling setting. It will waste energy and money, wear our too soon, and may over heat during heavy usage. An air conditioner has two jobs: cooling the air and extracting the moisture content in your home. Your unit may be putting out cool air, but unless it is effective, the humidity level will be too high. You can feel the mugginess when this occurs.

Simply measuring the square footage of usable space in your home is not enough to select the right size air conditioning system. You need to use a sizing guide to get an accurate estimate. Combine your results with a reputable HVAC contractor to find the right size system and you will begin to enjoy the savings you have calculated with the SEER Savings Calculator.

The correct HVAC system for your home will be an investment that makes sense and one you will be proud of. The energy cost savings will pay for your new air conditioner in a matter of a few years. New ACs are quieter than old systems. Multi-stage and variable-stage motors are more effective in keeping house temperatures even. This adds to the life of the AC unit and also saves money. Advanced technology is a marvel in itself and when it comes to air conditioners it makes life more pleasant in those hot and muggy summer days.
